Avian Flu

Avian flu is primarily a disease of birds and does not pass easily to other types of animal - although a few cases of the flu have been detected in cats and other small mammals. Humans that have become infected have had prolonged contact with infected birds. The Government wants you to contact them:
- If you find dead or sick birds and are concerned - contact the Defra helpline on 08459 335577. You should keep children away from dead birds and always wash your hands thoroughly if you have handled them.
- To register if you keep birds. This is compulsory for a flock of more than 50 birds.
In addition:
- If you keep birds, you should ensure you maintain a high level of hygiene to avoid the spread of disease
