Surrey's Local Resilience Forum - Emergency Planning and Preparation

Surreys Local Resilience Forum

SurreyAlert is used to advise members of the public and the media during an emergency. Information is also available to help you plan for an emergency before one occurs. The Emergency Services are responding to emergencies all the time and this site is not designed to replace the websites for each of the organisations.

About Us

If a major incident occurs in Surrey, this site will be used to give vital information to the people who live, work in, or travel through Surrey.

Surrey’s Local Resilience Forum (SLRF) was originally established in 1992 to co-ordinate the response of Surrey's emergency services and local authorities to major incidents. Surrey's Local Resilience Forum is made up of chief officers from:

  • Surrey Police
  • Surrey County Council
  • Surrey Fire & Rescue Service
  • Surrey Ambulance Service
  • Regional Health Authority
  • Primary Care Trusts
  • Surrey Boroughs and Districts
  • The Armed Forces
  • The Environment Agency
  • The Highways Agency
  • Government Office for the South East

Major incidents are rare events. Despite Surrey being a safe county, some of the major incidents that have affected the County in recent times include:

  • Wide area flooding
  • The fuel crisis
  • Foot and mouth

During these incidents it was difficult for people and businesses to get up to date, reliable information.

For this reason, continuing to work towards a safer community, Surrey's Police, Fire and Ambulance services, the County Council and the 11 district and borough councils have developed this innovative site called SurreyAlert.

From now on SurreyAlert will aim to keep people who are affected by an incident informed of progress and give guidance or advice where appropriate.

During an incident

When an incident occurs in Surrey, SurreyAlert will provide:

  • Details of the incident and how it may affect you and the community
  • News updates
  • Media Releases
  • Travel Updates

The information provided will be a consolidated response from the emergency services and local authorities.

The Public Relations and Communications departments will be responsible for updating the site with up to the minute information during the incident.

Every day alerts

SurreyAlert will also be used on a day-to-day basis to advise Surrey of:

  • Flood warnings that are in place on Surrey Rivers
  • Schools Closures in Surrey
  • Frequently Asked Questions providing key information about what to do before and during an emergency

The schools closure information is updated by the Education Department and the flood warnings by Runnymede Borough Council - Safer Runnymede Control Centre, 24 hours a day. The Frequently Asked Questions are updated by the Emergency Planning Unit at Surrey County Council, if you have any suggestions of what should be added here, please email us: slrf.business.support@surrey.pnn.police.uk

Behind the scenes

SurreyAlert also provides an internal system that enables the emergency services and local authorities in Surrey to communicate important information more effectively during a major incident.
